I went to put my bamboo canes up for the runner beans, only to find they had holes in them.some are quite large ,weakening the cane.Do you think something has eaten them?has this happened to anybody else?

New one on me... woodworm? Death watch beetle?     ???????????  :-\

They are probably made by insects, especially if they are neat.
Certain beetles make big holes up to 3mm, woodworm make little ones, about 1mm.

yes, but in bamboo cane?  ???
I always thought english larvae of flies / wasps / beetles lived in tree - wood, not grass - wood?? ::)
You couldn't make it up!

Sabotage? I'm not really paranoid ('cos they are out to get me..... )  ;D

My bean poles are nearly 70 years old and no wordworm

They're steel rods which were used for airfield perimeter barbed wire fencing in WW2.

Harder to come by these days though... but the Anderson Shelter sections are still doing sterling service on our site...  ;D

There are loads of beetles around which eat wood, so that's probably it.
