quorn what do we think of it?

Hi there

I hope that this has not been posted before

What do people think of Quorn, and the non meat products that we get on the market now.

I am not a strict meat eater, and it is nice to have a change here and there.

What do others think?

We eat Quorn on a regular basis. Vey nice and easier on the system than soya based products. Particularly nice in stir fries and casseroles. I also like to marinate it. Much higher in fibre than meat :) Keep a look out and Tescos does regular offers on it.

My dad reckons the protein content is a lie. Apparently the test used is unable to distinguish between protein & the cell walls of fungi. Since Quorn is made from fungi, you'd expect it to have a high amount of cell walls... yet it does have a high amount of protein...

Still, given that very few people have a protein deficiency, that probably doesn't matter even if he's right!

Like the sausages ( struggle to digest good quality meat sausages & won't buy the filled with any old rubbish ones) but don't enjoy the "bits" as a substitute for meat in stirfrys etc..

I don't expect the sausages to taste like sausages ( if that makes sense) ,but love the taste of the bramley version.

is it in the sale?

as a spag bol hector couldn't stand the texture no substitute for the real thing imo

I think that's hit the nail on the head. I don't view it as a sub for meat.  It cooks differently I leither marinate then sear quickly...or marinate and bung into sauce I have been braising. Many of my friends who eat meat "cook it to death" and then say not as tender as meat. Less is more with cooking Quorn  ;D
(not saying you have done this Mike...each to their own :)

I prefer the white chunks to the mince version. I also ADORE the bram;ley sausages...even my meat eating hubbly loves them.
Cauldron sausages are also super...can't stand the Linda Mc Cartney ones :)

I don't particularly like Quorn, including those sausages with apple! Its ok but I can live without it, if I want protein or texture to food I put puy lentils into lasagne and the like. Having said that quorn sausage toad in the hole is pretty good  ;D
But I do like Tofu, but like quorn, it needs marinating and with good strong flavours. I tend to marinate with soy, rice wine, ginger, garlic and chilli and fry it up then add to stir frys or soups....  :D

I reckon it's nearly indistinguishable in a Cottage Pie. Certainly acceptable for this meat eater!

It's a pretty good tool and cutter grinder, indeed can be considered the best but its complexity has always be offputting to me and I prefer the Stent for that reason.

Differing opinions going on here. 

I often wondered about what the real ingredients where in Quorn - hmmm some of what has said has made me think.

I will be making Quorn Chilli Mince Spagetti tomorrow, and will enjoy it no doubt.  My OH does like the best of both worlds, and that is beef/lamb mince or Quorn mince so that is not so bad.

One thing that was tasty and that is the Quorn Mushroom Pies.

Have to agree about the Tofu - that was vile, and had no taste like 'yuk' gelatine.

OK, these are not posh...just family staple ones :}

Mince one.

Jar of Pataks Curry paste (Madras) ...one /one and a half generous tablespoon(s)
Packet of quorn mince
tin of plum tomatoes (if winter) or fresh tomatos to taste in season from your garden :)
tomato puree one tablespoon or to taste
peas and/or corn
spinach
greek/natural yogurt

defrost mince if frozen
I heat/mix the tomatos /puree/curry ( I also add cumin/coriander and garlic too...we like it fairly hot as I mix in cooked rice). Ad veg and cook/simmer until rice cooked. I drain rice and add it/mix it in and serve withwraps and  side dish of cous cous and natual yogurt. One of our favourite family meals. If I wasn't mixing through the rice I would add less curry ingredients

White quorn pieces

tarragon copped if fresh or a good sprinkle of dried
dill seeds...good sprinkle
tin of Campbells Condensed Cream of Mushroom soup
corn and peas if you wish
quorn pieces
generous splash of sherry
rice to serve

defrost quorn if necessary
add soup, some water, herbs, corn and simmer
add sherry in last few minutes and heat through
yum, this is quick f  youhave been out and tastes gorgeous


Quorn and peach/fruit curry

white quorn
raisins/sultanas
coconut creaam sachet (get 5 in a pack)
tin of peaches fresh juice or light syrup (Tescos value tin)
Patcks korma paste 1 and a half generus tablespoons
chick peas optional
chopped sweet apple optional
lots of sliced banana
little bitof water
optional cinnamon/extra cumin /temeric and coriander

Heat through and just before serving stir through greek yogurt. Serve with rice or baked potato...sounds awful but really nice :)

I find the chunks and mince very tasty & use them fairly regularly.   The sausages I tend to find very hit and miss whereas the 1/4-er pounder pork style burgers with apple are absolutely deelish.  Tried the roast once - never again.  The sausage rolls are nice when still warm from the oven but I didn't like them as much once they were cold, the chicken-style pies with mushroom aes are ok now & then, same as the beef-style pudding with ale.

Found the plain fillets way to dry & didn't think they marinated well at all.

for anybody who might be interested - if you go onto the quorn website & join up for their newsletter you may occasionally be offered free samples of their proposed new products.   Afterwards you fill in a questionnaire regarding what you think of the product.  I've had several very cheap meals using this method & you also get to influence what products come outl.
