My tomato plants are coming on really well upto now, but a friend has told me they wont rippen until the end of August (not yet flowered so don't panic everyone) what is the best way to encourage early rippening to avoid all the fruit rippening at the same time?

JoeCocker, If they are cordon type tomatoes not bush I think you will find that the tomatoes on the lower trusses will be ripening while the ones on the higher trusses are just developing.

and if they are in the greenhouse my neighbour normally starts getting ripe ones as early as end of july but i suppose that dependes on when they were sown ???.

Early breed? 65 days from planting.

Later? 80-90 days.

is that from planting in pots or from sowing?

Tomatoes grown in a greenhouse
Seeds planted in Jan, Feb, March, Are usualy ready from July, August, September and into October.
Outdoor Tomatoes under average conditions should be ready to pick in mid August.
