Does anyone know what this plant is please?
My friend gave me the woody root, which has now sprouted some leaves.  She says it has a nice flower a bit similar to gypsophila.

This is a close-up of the leaves

Looks like a battered  clump of hollyhock. Unless it is leathery and shiney then it might be acanthus.

??? looks like hollyhocks to me too...  :-\

No, it's definitely not hollyhock because my friend would have known that one!  It's something more unusual from what she told me.

Thanks everyone for your ideas but I've found out now what it is.
It's Crambe - not a plant I'd ever heard of before.  It grows tall and spreads out so I've planted it in completely the wrong place just next to a path.

We googled Crambe and my friend recognised it as Cordifolia.
