Limousin Lass

At long last I have a veggie plot, it is quite long and thin and runs from East to West,  what would be the best order to plant the following so that they get best growing conditions.
Runner Beans,
French Beans
Peas
Carrots
Bettroot
Parsnips
Turnips and Swede
Onions
Spring Onions
Leeks
Lettuce
Cauliflower
Broccoli
Tomato

My thanks in advance for your advice.

Welcome to A4A, are you actually in the Limousin (?) as that would change things with greater sun intensity. Are you planning short runs along the width or long ones "with the plot?"  :-\

Hi and welcome from me too
Looking at your list I'd try and group the veges by type and by height. The height thing would mean trying not to shade plants too much, so your runner beans could go at the back, broccoli can also get quite high, but not till later in the season so not such a problem. The onions and carrots could be interplanted with each other (companion) and things like lettuce are quick growers so can be popped into spaces between other plants
Reading that back I'm not too sure it makes any sense  ???  Plus I always thought the best way to plant is south to north, so short runs would work??
Either way, lovely part of the world Limousin tho  :)

As said before, East to West planting you would have to take account of the height of the crops, short on the South side to Tall on the North side. However this would rule out any crop rotation unless you divide the plot into three shorter beds.

So I would say North to South.

Thank you for your replies.

Saddad,  Yes, I am actually in the Limousin (beautiful sunbathing weather yesterday, chilly and rain coming down like stair rods today  ::), typical Limousin weather).  I had planned on doing short rows across the plot and planting just a small amount of different veggies to see what grows best here.  Hopefully by next year we will be able to get some more land cleared so that I can grow veggies in sufficient quantities for the freezer.

1066,  Yes, It makes sense ;D.  I had planned on keeping the different types of veggies together so that I know where I am for crop rotation and popping bits and pieces of salad stuff in where I can.

Larkshall,  I had planned on dividing the bed up into sections, legumes, root crops, brassicas and onions.  (see above reply to saddad).

The ones I'm really not sure about where to place are the runner beans and tomato.   Would the runners be best furthest east, furtherest west or in the middle (the French don't have this problem as they don't grow runners).

You might struggle with runners if it is dry in the summer... they are from the rainforests! Climbing French Beans, from Mexico, would be happier...  :-\

I would say plant the runner beans up a wigwam of canes as far away from the sun as the land permits and the rest will be happy in any direction so long as they are given correct spacing.

manicscousers

Hi, Limousin lass, welcome to a4  ;D

Limousin Lass

Thanks for the welcome manicscousers,  I have been a lurker here for about 4 years whilst growing some veggies in pots and odd spaces in my small garden in UK so I feel as though I know a lot of you already  ;) ;D.

saddad,  The climate here in the Limousin is not that different to the South of England, perhaps a few more sunny days and a little bit warmer.  I will be growing some French beans but, as far as I am concerned, nothing beats the taste of Runners.  We won't have a problem with water, we have, at the last count, 5 springs around the grounds one of them quite close to the veggie patch that we have diverted into a large holding tank sunk into the ground with a pump. If that runs out we can pump water from our large pond.

Hubby came home with a polytunnel yesterday that was on special offer so will wait until we can get that erected and put the toms in there.
