i've just been down to the allotment and a load of my potatoes are lying on top of the soil, my earlies are ok as they came through about a week ago and i've ridged them up, but some of my seconds and main crops are now on top of the soil it looks as though they have either been dug up or pushed up from underneath anyone got any ideas as to what may have cause this, not of them appear to have been eaten they were just lying to the top  ???

Fork

How deeply did you set them in the first place?

The soil settling after a downpour could be the problem if they were shallow.

Or maybe someone is playing silly buggers!
You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends nose

they are set about 4" down we've not had any heavy rain lately and i don't think it's anyone messing about as the maincrops are in a big bed approx 16"x 12" and there were no foot prints in the soil some of the manure the i put the potatoes on was also on top of the soil.

it might be moles, there is a mole down there i saw a mole hill on one of the paths but there wern't any in the beds but i guess that doesn't mean that they can't be tunneling under the beds.

Eristic

Did you forget to plant them maybe?

staris

no they were definatly planted i was only looking yesterday to see if any of them had started to show, i've planted them again so i'll go and check on them in the morning, we do have a lot of wildlife there is a fox around but i would have thought if it was something like that they would have been eaten but none of them looked damaged.
