Lidl mosquito net - might work for brassicas?

£3.99 for a mosquito net - wonder if this is strong enough, and translucent enough, to make a brassica cage? Any thoughts?

Not sure how big you want your cage. I ordered scaffold net from a company on ebay. 50 metres long 2 metres wide. £32.00 delivered.

Not huge, in my case - I have veg beds in my back garden, which, though it is 65ft long, is only about 12ft wide so not as big as it first seemed. No room for large allotment-sized plots...
How fine is the mesh on the scaffolding netting?

I would feel terribly guilty after seeing Red Nose day and all the children suffering.  Wonder why they sell them here when they should send them to hot countries.  Apart from that good idea and I do need some new neeting.  Not having a go, just a bit surprised that it would be a good seller here, apart from allotment people.

I bought the Lidl mosquito net last year as an individual anti wasp net for small plum trees. It worked well as it is suitably shaped for hanging over a small tree.
It is not really shaped for a brassica bed, unless it is a very small one.

I found it works excellent. I've attached some bamboo canes to the ends to act as weights and they are easy to roll the net onto the top, as seen below. I think it keeps a bit warm in the winter too. Thiss picture was taken a few days ago.


Have a look around local building sights that are taking down the scaffolding....then it's FREE ;D

I think its well worth its price. Last year i only had a small quantity of old net, the butterflies laid eggs all over my greens, when the caterpillars hatched they trashed the lot :'( :'( :'( i'm not having that this year. Net net net

I bought one of Lidl's mosquito nets last year, it was enough to cover my small raised beds of strawberries and peas. Found it just right for what I needed.

Excellent - thanks Lorna, I think I'll follow your example. Will also look into the debris netting - I won't need it in such huge quantity, but could perhaps split an order with someone else.
Borlotti, I suppose people buy mosquito nets mainly for going on holiday? But we do have biting mosquitos here too, I do get bitten a bit in the summer but not enough to bother with a net. I'd like a net next time I go to Virginia, though (where my husband is from) - I got bitten to pieces last summer. There is no malaria there that I know of, but there *is* West Nile Virus - but principally, the bites are just so maddening. So, I might get one net for me, and one for the brassicas. :)

You'll find it is that price before delivery.  Go forward in the order process and it comes out at £37.95.

I just wish that they would make the debris netting in a better colour. I think it looks awful. Someone on our plot had a purple one last year.

Yes, it's a shame about the colours. Green would be fine if they'd use a subdued, dingy green - but it's always that bright synthetic shade. I suppose they want it to be visible, on building sites?
