Heartbreak tomatoes

Sorry, Hugh I assumed this was another thread about blighted tomatoes so I hadn't looked here after the first few posts. The only part I would add is that while being in light or darkness doesn't make much difference, keeping the fruit enclosed (in the dark, so they don't get cooked) will trap ethylene and accelerate the ripening process.

RE: Ripening off the vine.

You say dark is best. i currently have them hung up on a string, this being the only place I have to store this quantity of green tomatoes.  Would placing sheets of newspaper over them be enough 'dark' for them to get them ripening?

Hang them in a cupboard (airing cupboard perhaps?), which is what John meant by being enclosed. If you can`t do that then leave them hanging where they are. Don`t worry, the difference will be very slight.
