The external drive (USB I presume) should have had its own power supply (See my earlier post).
The only way I can see both going pop at the same time is if there was a power surge and both the PC and the external drive were NOT on a surge protector.
If you haven't already it may be worth spending a small amount of cash on a surge protector. I bought a "tower" one from Wilkinson's the other week which is great, the plug sockets are angled so even for things which have an adaptor block rather than a normal 3 pin plug still fit and don't take up too much room.

A surge protector makes sense, and they cost very little in comparison with the damage a surge will create.

My sister had a surge some years ago when the elect sub-station was hit by lightning and did untold damage to their hard drive.
