Last year the slugs and the dog got all my strawberries. They are around the edge of the raised bed veggie patch. I have several empty hanging baskets, can I plant the strawberries in them? I can hang them under the apple trees.......

I grew some in hanging baskets a couple of years ago with quite a lot of success.   The best tip I can offer to ensure you've got some water retaining crystalls mixed in with your compost to reduce the chance of them drying out & going seedy.

I used hanging baskets for mine as I had such a small garden at the time I found myself strapped for space.   By using hangin baskets (or in my case - window boxes) I found I could go some of my own produce & pretty up a rather dull looking yard at the same time.

Just be careful where you put the hanging baskets though - I tried some on front of the house & found several little blighters helping themselves en-route to & from school!!!!!

Keeping them damp enough is the real problem... and don't forget birds like them too!  :)

Thanks for your inputs......I have some of those cystals, a bit old but maybe still viable???

Didnt think of other Pests. No school-kids in the back garden but loads of birds..... how can I have both them and strawberries? Net curtains over fruits???  A bit ugly though............

The crystals should be fine... if they got damp you would have a bag of gel...
bird protection? Net is the only answer... but only needed for about two months...  :-\

My strawbs planted in the ground last year were ruined by slugs but the ones in small window boxes grew really well, so I'm not going to waste the ground this year and just plant in boxes. The only problem is what to do with the runners? I have this idea to try this year of hanging plastic cups of compost aside the planters to root the runners in, all I need to do is make some stiff wire hangers for the cups.

You could also try putting a plantpot saucer in the bottom of the basket to act as a reservoir. I do this with my baskets and it does help.

I use a piece cut off the bottom of a 2 litre plastic bottle  ;D
