Hi

Where are you?  (South is usually warmer than North)
Do you have a greenhouse?

Generally I'd say Beg March in warmer areas under cloches/fleece and end March/April in colder areas again with protection...

If you have a greenhouse then you could do them earlier...

But in my view - yes its is far too early so far... the coldest months are usually Jan/Feb.  Carrot seed will sit and sulk in cold soil and will never germinate.  If the soil feels cold it is too cold!

It's just that I've got itchy fingers and some websites suggest you can start sowing carrot in January.
I'll leave it to March.

Thanks

I have some that say you can plant them Oct-March but they are Italian Seed, and I think it may be slightly warmer there!  ;D

I can understand the itchy fingers - I get (and have!) them too (as do I imagine many of us!)  January is fine for a heated greenhouse (or poss in very warm areas, e.g. SW Cornwall?) In my spreadsheet I keep (of planned and actual dates) I did them in mid March when I lived in Oxfordshire (too cold till then) although I hoped to get them in earlier; the soil was always too cold...  I am now in North Yorkshire, and am only just clearing and resurecting my new garden and will need to see when i can start doing them (I will get a greenhouse though so make the season longer up here)

Have fun

Just remember, I know we don't normally believe them all that much, but I did see the lunch time weather and snow is forecast for the start of next week and temperatures are falling fast.  Sow something indoors like basil or parsley that at least you can keep in and use, or a pot of cut and come again leaves.

I've tried sowing early carrots in January or February, outside but under cloches but without success as I think the ground is too cold. I know it's tempting to get going but I'd advise waiting a bit.

Carrot seeds are cheap.

All the gardening mags have packs of free seed and even if you buy a pack there are hundreds in a pack.

As far as I am concerned it is still too early but there is nothing to stop you having a go under cloches, you can only lose a few seeds, and probably learn something.
