Hi, this is my first post, I have just got a plot in the field at the bottom of our garden.
I am going to have problems with wildlife, rabbits, pheasants, pigeons etc. I can't put a fence around, but would garden mesh / netting do? It is quite a big plot, that will be put into 4 sections  I do find unpegging and pegging down netting tedious. Any ideas everybody.  --- I do like wildlife, so on the dinner plates is out of the question.

hi and welcome. i also find the pegging and unpinning of netting quite tiresome :-X and so this year i plant to create walls of netting using fine chicken wire and regular netting, which i can the construct and put together or take apart easily at the beginning and end of the season. and for harvesting or weeding i could simply remove a wall when needed. i also hope this will stop wastage, as each year all the pegging and unpinning causes me to damage some of my netting beyond repair >:(.

Hello and welcome.  ;D

What would be the difference in effect of erecting tempory fencing as opposed to netting ? Both would "section" off part of the plot.

Not saying use a massive fence concreted in but anything is better than nothing.

Hello Remy and welcome to A4A.

Ok this is what I do...

4, 6 or 8, 4ft posts in the ground.
The posts each have three nails in, top middle and bottom.
I then wrap builders debris netting around the posts, hooking it on the 3 nails.
Over the top I have a different netting with two 8ft bamboo canes in the middle and I have balls on top of the canes (stops ripping)
((The balls are those that are used in kids ball pools, ask on FREECYCLE))
On the corner where I'm going to use as the *entrance* fix the debris netting around a narrow piece of wood and close it to the post using one of those *Hook and Eye* fasteners. (Hope that makes sense). This can be moved and used over and over again.
Using the 2, 8ft canes allows you to stand up without fighting with the netting.

Good luck with your new lottie. Don't forget to take loads of photos.

hiya, remymartin, welcome to the site, we use lots of builder's netting like Lauren S
Ray staples one side to the raised bed then we use old tent framing to build a frame, the other side has a cane threaded through with nails to hook over..don't think it would stop rabbits or deer, though  ;D

remymartin

Thanks manicscousers, & Lauren S for you ideas, have taken them onboard, thank goodness I don't have deer, waiting for the plot to dry a little then some serious digging(oooh my poor back, I can feel it now, --No Pain No Gain) a long way to go, lots to learn. Can't wait.

Sorry, also thanks to Flunky & thifasmom, I need more practice navigating and using this site

Hi Remy and welcome, so you live in the IOW, don't know an old bloke with a caravan who collects red chandeliers by any chance.  ;D ;D ;D
MAY THE CORN BE WITH YOU.

remymartin

Hi cornykev, I know a bloke with a caravan, but not with chandeliers
