Lentils?

Was browsing the new RHS plant sale website and came across lentil seeds.  Anyone grown them before?  What kind of yield from a plant?  They're expensive though!

Poor, I would have thought this far north Ceres.  :-\

Not lentils, but this year we grew some rice in a cat litter tray. Not too successfully, the instructions suggested a paddling pool, and I think the litter tray was too small.  And I don't think we kept it wet enough, it dried out a couple of times when we forgot to water.  When it seemed to stop growing (after about 15cm) I got fed up with it cluttering up the patio and chucked it on the compost, so we'll never know.

Until you get a nice rice crop from your compost bin next year!   ;)

Franchi is where we got the rice from, I thought about the lentils at the time, but the rice sounded more intriguing.

Thanks lbb, I found them there this morning.  I think the RHS site might be provided by SoI.  Seem to be remarkably similar.

I did a bit of googling on lentils - surprisingly (to me anyway!) they like a cool climate and will stand a bit of frost.  The yield is 2 lentils per pod(!) so I think you'd need a big space to get a vegetable curry's-worth.

But, for a bit of fun, I think I'll try some from the store cupboard.  If I can get them to sprout, I'll pot them up and see what happens.

Seeds of Italy and Franchi are the same!

It's possible to get lentils for sprouting seeds - so if they sprout in the sprouter, that could headstart them for growing in the ground?
