Hi,

I've just brought a fruit garden pack which contains 5 raspberries 1 gooseberry and 1 blackcurrant all in 1 pot.

My question is do i seperate them to plant them? i have a half oak barrel which i was hoping to use would this be suitable and do i have to make drainage holes in it first?

hope someone can help!

Thanks

lucy

hiya, mummybunny, we have our blackcurrants planted in their own 3x3 area, same for our gooseberries, raspberries we grow all in a line tied into  wires to hold them, they send up new canes around the original plant for the next year, depends how big your barrel is, we had our gooseberries and blackcurrants in a pot for a year then put them in the ground, we didn't get lots of fruit  :-\

Each of those grows into a big plant.   The gooseberry and blackcurrant will bush out and the rasps will grow upwards.  The rasps will need support like manics suggested so I wouldn't put them in a container.  If you want to plant one in the barrel, I'd chose the blackcurrant, only because if you need to move it around, it's easier if it doesn't have evil thorns.  You will need to put drainage holes in and put a drainage layer in the bottom.  If it's a big barrel, I'd use polystyrene chunks to keep the weight down.

hi where did you get this pack??

Hyacinth

Hello Lucy, I saw those at Wyvales on Tuesday..*answers your q, 'mom. 8) - bout £14.99?

Like Manics has written, don't think the raspberries will work in a tub, even one of their own, because of their growing habit year on year....the gooseberry tho and the blackcurrant I'd try in a deep tub each with lots of horse muck incorporated. I've tried (unsuccessfully :o) to move both these from my garden borders after they'd been in 3-4yrs - can vouch for the fact that they both put down deep roots ::), but I'd certainly give it a go. But praps get another half-barrel for the second - really can't see both in the same tub coming to much. You'll certainly need drainage holes btw.

Regards, Lishka

My plesh, mom..btw Ceres, I didn't see your reply when I posted mine - sorry :-[

mummybunny

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies. I do have another option if you think it would be better? I had an area along i wall that i was keeping for the green beans and peas. Do you think this would be a better option? i could then use the barrels for the beans and peas?

What do you think?

Lucy

If space is limited, think that's a smashing idea - one I'd go for 8).....ps how deep is the border along the wall & is the wall s/w facing? Any chance you could fit peas/beans behind the permanent fruit shrubs p'raps?

mummybunny

Hi Hyacinth,

The bed along the wall is quite deep but not wide enough to put aything else behind once fruits planted! My garden is south facing and the area is about 14ft in length so will this be enough room side by side?

How much should i leave between each? and in what order is it better to have blackberries and raspberries next to each other or better to seperate to either end? I also have some all gold cains to plant i was totally blown away by the different colour raspberries you can get  :o

Also as manicscousers pionted out i would need support wires would i need to put this in first of later on? And whats the bst thing to use?

Sorry for all the questions just want to get it right  ???  Thanks lucy
