over winter onions

any good readily available sets and tips for them?type ,time to plant,soil conditioning?

I buy from Edwin Tuckers or Organic Gardening Catalogue - Radar (brown onions), Electric (reds) and Silvermoon (white). Costs £1.60 for 100 sets which is minimum pack size, and if you buy more than one pack you get them for £1.40. Postage varies - I paid £3. But still think this is a reasonable price.

I get very few that bolt and block plant them about 5" about (my beds are 4ft wide). Planted in early october usually when I have cleared the courgettes etc out of the way. I lightly turn the soil over before planting and sprinkle liberally with chicken pellets and some home made compost. They seem to do fine on this. We are on a light clay soil.  :) Hope this helps.

I have grown in this order - Radar (excellent), Senhui Yellow (carp) and then Radar again (again excellent)  This year I shall mostly be growing Radar! ;D

thanks suzanne i tried a japanese variety a few years ago it was my first planting after taking on new plot.soil was never prepared right and the outcome showed it!!
we use a lot of onion so gonna have another go

I give the soil a good sprinkling of chicken pellets a week before I plant, I planted mine the back end of September last year.  ;D ;D ;D
