Peaches and nectarines from stones

I was told that my grandad grew a peach tree from a stone -has anyone here tried it? Any tips?

Tried a plum last year but ended up throwing it in the bin because it didnt take.
would love to know where I went wrong. :)

I have a vague memory that it might produce fruit about the same time as our daughter leaves university. She's 5 and the plum is older than she is :o
