The races were all cancelled anyway. The river was going down when I was in won on Wednesday but we had torrential rain Wed night so it was probably up again!

I was dying to try out Jeannine's advice, went down to the plot where I confidently expected to pick about 25 perfect cobs, and found them all picked and eaten and the plants pushed over. We all think it is badgers, not rats.

Next year I will surround them with swathes of netting. I know badgers are immensely strong and can push anything over or dig under it, but I am hoping that they will not like to get their claws tangled up (who does! Netting is maddening stuff to handle) and will not bother.

Last year they dug up my newspaper/cardboard and woodchip paths to get at the worms hiding underneath in dry weather, so I know they are strong and determined..... They are credited with eating one man's barrel of carrots last week, as well.
