Hi all - not been around for ages, but that doesn't mean to say we're not gardening - oh no! We have fine crops of veggies!
Now I want to grow some lemon grass (I have a small pickle and chutney business, so it would be economical for me to grow my own, as well as reducing air miles)
I have rooted some in a soilless medum and have now grown them on in rockwool - but what do I do next? Should I go with a NFT method or can anyone else suggest a cheap alternative? I am sure hub can work wonders with a pump as he has designed our auto watering system from the water butts.
Has anyone grown lemon grass in any way and if so, any hints would be much appreciated!

Hi Evoo! Welcome aboard. I haven't a clue what the answer to your question is but would love to know too as it would be really nice to have homegrown lemon grass. Some expert will be along shortly! ;) Hope you enjoy the forum.

hi, evoo, nice to meet you, we grew lemongrass last year in the poly, from a piece I bought in lidl..it grows like a weed, under the right conditions,
I had it in a big pot in the poly, unfortunately, lost it during winter, obviously too damp in there  :-\
mind you, it did well when it was growing  ;D

I've grown it from seed - germinates really easily, lives outside happily in pots in summer, needs shelter in winter.  I just use seed compost and multi-purpose compost for growing on.  Have got some on the allotment in a pot in normal soil also doing fine.

I grew it in a pot in the greenhouse one year. Grew fine during the Summer, but rotted during the Winter. It will not stand low temperatures. Is it not from the hot, steamy jungles of Asia?

I have been growing them since last year, I put out during the summer after all chance of frost and keep it in the house during the winter as my greenhouse is not heated. they don't mind a wet foot but not cold and wet. I split mine this spring, so now have four :D. I grow in regular bought compost.

Thanks, especially for the tip about them not liking the cold. I will bring them indoors for the winter and try and keep them going.
