What colour and shape do these start off? I've got pumpkins and squash on the same patch and I'm not sure whether any of the fruit are squash!

Also, can I pick and use small jack-o-lantern pumpkins or will they not be ripe?

baby butternuts look like baby butternuts and are green, they remind me of little lightbulbs. you cant fail to recognise them really.  mind you i havent grown a lot of other squashes at the same time.

Thanks- don't think I've got any in that case. :(

Caroline you can use immature squash and pumpkins like courgettes, they don't have the dry sweet flesh but are fine, we always use the tiny ones that we pull up with the mature ones at harvest time. XX Jeannine

When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

Now I think about it, that;'s probably what the well-chewed thing I found yesterday was! Guess the slugs find them tastier than pumpkins and courgettes.
