Hi all,

Out of the plant i bought and the ones i was given i have forgotten what some are - next year i will remember to label them.

can anyone recognise what these are at this stage?

Also - what size should shallots be before pulling? I have included a pic of the size mine are - with my thumb next to it for scale!

PS - please excuse the weeds!

Rhubarb Thrasher

1 - beetroot (is the other plant a radish)
2- brassica of some sort - broccoli?
3 Cavolo nero
4 leave the shallots til the leaves have gone yellow; lift and dry

Thanks.

I did assume that was beetroot (probably another beetroot next to it but am not sure what the green one in the bottom left is!) and some type of Kale

As for 2 - i have no idea! Could be brussels srouts - will find out eventually i suppose!

the green one in 1 is probably a radish. They don't do too well at this time of year (go to seed). Sow them later, like from next month, and they are really good

could be a sprout, from the way it's growing  :)

If the first is a sprout, it has already bent over at the base and was not planted in firmed down soil.

I suggest that you stake it, and any others like it, to prevent them being buffetted by the wind as they will produce "blown" sprouts. It could be purple sprouting broccoli but that will benefit from staking as well.

Two other points:-

Check for caterplllars and kill them, you have lot of holes already and they can strip a plant that size easily.

Get ready to net them as protection against pigeons.

Nobody ever said it was easy............

Thanks for the advise - i will get them staked upright. Will do the same to teh PSB as i have noticed on seems to have fallen over and will grow sideways and probably knowck the others down.

Dont I know it's not easy! But it is fun and worthwhile so it balances itself out.
