I'm about ready to uplift winter (Japanese) Onions I've heard you should bend the tops over before lifting, Does this help? or can i lift the onions cut off the tops and also trim the roots - thanks

It does if you intend leaving them in the ground to ripen, plus at the same time you could put a fork under them to tease them out of the soil slightly, then allow them to ripen and dry out in the ground.

Personally I find this a bit of a waste of time I just lift mine leaving the tops on, and place them upside down on a slatted shelf I have in the green house for this purpose.

When dry, I dress the onions and string them up for storage.

If you don't have the space; hang them upside down to dry on a rope or wire in a sunny sheltered spot till dry then clean them up for storage.

Wait till they flop over; bending them over is a waste of effort as they do it naturally. Lift them at that point, and put them somewhere to dry. Don't trim them till the leaves have dried up.
