I heard a tale that my local council has sold our allotments to a Housing Trust?.
Can they do this?, and where do we stand legally
Are the council legally obliged to provide land for allotments if enough people
want it?.

Hi davey boy,

Yes the council can sell the land if your site isn't  a statutory site, if it is statutory then they have to apply to the Ministry before they can sell it.  So you need to find out if your site is statutory plus I am sure the council have a legal obligation to let all plot holders know the are selling the land as you must all have an agreement with your council and I think I am right in saying they have to give you so much notice.

Yes, the council are legally obliged to supply allotments but I am afraid they don't always do this.  It will depend on the area you live in and how much priority there is for housing in that area and how much free land they have to turn into allotments
