Newbie Alert - Allotment Land Ownership

Hi, Newbie Here!

I have recently become an owner of an allotment plot on a new private site which has just been opened near me.

I had a strange conversation the other day, when i just asked in passing who owns the land? and was told that we do! When asked them to clarify, i was told that each person who has been assigned a plot now owns that bit of land???

I am really confused, along with others as we pay £25.00 per year for the plot.

Has anyone ever come across this before, is this normal?

I imagine they mean that you own the bit of land until you give it up and someone else takes it over!  I cannot imagine that someone would just "give" pieces of land away and you would have received a Land Certificate from the Land Registry if that was the case.

You can check with the Land Registry who owns it!

Hi

The site is located just on the outskirts of Leeds/Castleford. The land is one of many coal mines that was in our area and is currently be regenerated.

The soil is not too great a bit on the clay side and to make life more interesting whole area is very low on the water table.
