My sweet potatoe has been suspended above water for ages now, and I have noticed a long thin white root growing from the botton of it, its this what I am neant to plant cause nothing but a tiny purple prout has grown on the top

No, what should happen is that the sprout will grow into a shoot or slip.  You then take the slip off the potato, put it into water and in a few days it will have roots so you can pot it up.  When you say suspended above water, you've got part of the potato in the water, haven't you?

caseylee

yeah the bottom of it is in the water, but the slips on top are not growing at all, have I done it right

How long has it been in the water?  They can be slow to get going.  I started mine in January and it only produced roots and one small slip in the first 3 months.  It's now got going strongly.  Is it in a warm place with good light and are you keeping the water topped up?

I started mine about feb its always got water and and its in a vrey warm place plenty of light I might just leave it a bit longer and see how it goes

I spent £12 on a dozen slips from T+M and they arrived yesterday. Even after a day in water the look sorry for themselves, but at least they aren't as flaccid!
I must try my own next year...
