I think I planted my onion sets too deeply.  I didnt realise that I was supposed to leave the tips showing.  I think I may have an inch of soil covering them.

The stalks are growing well (nice thick stems and sturdy) but I can't tell whether the onion is forming - its not showing above ground.  I planted them around November and they're red onions.

So do you think I may be ok? I would have thought that if the onion is rotting in the ground then the stalks wouldnt be growing so well.

Your opinion would be appreciated.

You will be fine. As the bulb begins to grow simply remove some of the soil from the top of the bulb. I have seen some websites that say to plant small sets an inch deep.
My idea was to build Liverpool into a bastion of invincibility. Napoleon had that idea. He wanted to conquer the bloody world. I wanted Liverpool to be untouchable. My idea was to build Liverpool up and up until eventually everyone would have to submit and give in. Bill Shankly.

Oh that's good to hear.  I suspect that I would have followed the instructions on the packet.  I'm excited about my onions aagain now!!  :)

I think you will find as the onion grows the roots will push the bulb up.
