Mr Smith

I have about twenty runner bean plants about three inches high that have been outside for the last two weeks in fibre pots, are these plants ok to be planted out on the lotty or move to larger pots, :)

Depends on where you are, a late frost will kill them. Even if you are frost frre now a strong wind can do as much harm. If you must put them out give them a shelter/windbrek of fleece/glass...

Ishard

Some have been planted already down Lake Terrace but Im holding mine back untill after the 15th.

The beans catch up anyway and the ones already planted dont look well at all!

Mr Smith

I will plant them out with plastic bottles round for protection :)

Never tried them, but feel that bottles could be a hazard?

1. Where are they?
2. Do you need to put them out?
3. Have they filled the pots with roots?

Mr Smith

Had a re-think about mi runners they will be staying in the fibre pots for another week at home, no Tim I can't see any roots  :)

Mine are indoors ,I planted Barlotti? as they did not do well last last year after being planted direct.

They are huge ,the pots are filled and I really wish I had left it until now to sow them as I know it is to early yet for them to go out.

I am going to sow my runner beans direct into the soil as they did fine last year. :)

They do grow quick. I have been watching mine being born all week. (whilst working in the greenhouse on other things)

There is always a risk of frost in May. This year it has been slow for everything because of the cold; so unless you have a good shelter. fleece, bubble wrap, even place a plastic bottle or fasten a plastic bag over each plant every night. Better to put them into bigger pots if they outgrow their containers and keep them undercover for a couple of weeks more at night time.

OH, aka Tony planted out some Red Rum runner beans today.  Should have to say a bit early for this area, but we have plenty of fleece.

My advice is, keep your eye on the weather forecast, and if it shows the merest possibility of going below freezing, fleece, fleece, fleece. ;D

Check your area. If there is no frost due for the next two weeks then you should be OK.
