compost

hi all, i need to start a new bin and well my 14yo has me stumped
he says...
why do we have them at the bottom on ground we dont use, why not spread them around then they will be putting goodness into ground we will use the next year?
what do you all think?

Smart kid!  I suspect the only reason is because they're unsightly so we want to hide them away.

my mate includes his compost area as part of a 5 year rotation.

after root crops, before his sweetcorn! he doesn't grow brassica crops.

I have 3 compost bays.....they have to be at the part of the allotement adjacent to the path for delivery of tree/shrub shreddings,grass cuttings which I get free.....the principle of moving compost points about the allotement is wise though...I intend to start doing just that

Put them on beds you intend to manure/add compost.

This saves moving it great distances and any juices that flows out in the rotting process will remain in the bed.

This had never occurred to me. I now feel extremely thick, and as soon as I've emptied my two fullish bins I will start rotating them.  :P
