definining the edges of your plot

After edging the grass paths of our plot yesterday, and having a quick look at how fellow plot-holders do theirs... how do you edge your plot.

By that I mean the grass paths. Obviously you keep them short and strim or shear to get the neat edge.

Do you just edge like you would you lawn/flower border at home leaving it quite shallow?

Or do you make a very defined edge with the spade and rake the soil up slightly (thats what I am tending to do)

But are there any crafty little tricks?

Hi Ant,

That is how I do it with a decent depth so that it is easy to use edging shears and the slugs and the like can't hide there!!

I have noticed other plot holders don't do anything and I have noticed that they have grass and weeds growing into their plot and all they do is strim the height off!  REALLY irritates me!  Still not my problem!!

My edging is all patio paving or wooden sleepers.  So I just dig the beds right up to it.
All you do and all you see is all your life will ever be

I'm still trying to work out how to strim paths without accidentally strimming the tops off my garlic etc as i don't have raised beds with edging. I tend to do my lawn edging at home with sheep shears, I decided I'd have to do that at the allotment too but it's time consuming. At home the job can be broken up into small time slots but as you say stimming the top off doesn't stop the weeds/grass growing into the bed.

I have a battery powered strimmer which is good for getting a lot done on one go, not decapited any veggies yet (luckily!)

Once the edges are sorted though I tend to just take the shears as its quieter and a bit neater.

Now the question is, how do you stop couch grass from your grass path?
Is the only way dig it out? or are you just resigned to the fact you will have to edge it properly and keep it cut well  ???

I've just dug a nice deep trench on two sides of my lotty to take excess water away so in my case that defines the edge of the allotment :)
