Need a Leek

Hi All, I am in my second season and have taken on a second plot ( which is almost dug), I have been told to fill it with spuds as this will do the ground some good. Any Ideas on variety also someone has given me a bag of International Kidneys ( Jersey Royals) so any advice on them would be great too ;).

Cheers

manicscousers

we've got kestrel in for 2nd early and desiree for main crop, little slug damage last year, with all the rain  :o
wonderful harvest  :)

You do it good Tony... by digging them in and then digging them out! Any you can find... I'm an Epicure/Red Duke/ Anya/ Picasso/Desiree sort of fan myself!

I was talking about this very subject at the weeked.  I don't know about the ground, but digging out 200' of trenches didn't do my hands anygood!  Mind you, the beer afterwards was wonderful.

Saddad is right (as usual, he's worth listening to) it's you who does all the work, not the spuds.

I grow Belle de Fontenay as a first early, which have always done better for me than Jerseys.

I like to try different main crops but King Edward has always done well for me.  I tried Cara once, the slugs loved them

One I would never be without is pink fir apple, a lovely potato.

As with a lot of veg, it's worth asking around the other plot holders to see what does well in your area.

I guess you are right there, never thought of it that way. I suppose it's just the whole process that does the ground good from start to finish. Thanks all for your input.

kt.

Kestrel as a 2nd early without question.   Maincrop would be Desiree for first choice and Verity for second
All you do and all you see is all your life will ever be

Second and third Pink Fir Apple
For myself I am an optimist - it does not seem to be much use being anything else.
