Not trying to teach you old gardeners to suck eggs but for them that has not tried it.
Mice and voles can decimate your planted seeds over night before they even get the chance to grow so i start mine in spouting, let them grow to about 4" then slide them of into a pre dug trench

When you wake up on a morning say "good morning world" and be grateful

I guess thats why after two months mine havent germinated outside at all then even though they are under a glass cloche.... :-\

Springbokgirlie
Some people soak their seeds in parafin to deter mice :D

Im going to start them all off again today in the greenhouse in toilet rolls.

I have saved a 3 x 1 bed just for peas too, and the 3 rows I planted of seeds are not showing anything at all.  So I am guessing i have been raided by the little critters lol.

My peas havent sprouted yet either but ive always planted them straight outside with no bother.  wonder if its this continuing cold weather?

grawrc

I presprout them on damp kitchen towelling in a seed tray. Once they have a good healthy shoot I plant them out.

hiya, loz, welcome to the site,
if we put peas straight in the ground, they either get eaten by mice before they sprout or slugs when they do..
we grow ours like davy, got 1 gutter full in the ground now, 1 ready to plant and another just starting..isn't growing time fun  ;D

twiggy

h there .....do you  then  slide  them out of  the  gutter  into the  bed  ..?  also  some  people   have  huge  net  cages  around  6 ft  over  the  place  where  the  peas  are  going  to  be ...why  is  this ?

cambourne7

mine went into modules outside in the mini greenhouse 2 weeks ago and they have all just about germinated and we have some house sparrows nesting in the front of the house picking off the slugs so not had to put pellets on yet.

manicscousers

we dig a trench about 6" deep and slide them out, after watering to make sure the soil sticks..some people need to net to stop pigeons eating them  :)

I planted three varieties today, in pots to go in the mini-greenhouses. I've kept back Alderman, which I've got more seed of, till the soil warms up a bit more. they'll go outside, under cloches. That seems to be the only way I can get them started satisfactorily in the open ground.

Hi manicscoursers (hope I spelled that right)  thanks for advice.  ive planted some indoors now, but in previous years have always planted them outside and theyve done well.

manicscousers

no probs, loz..trouble is, our soil's very wet, they'd probably rot before they grew  ;D

Mr Smith

I have had my peas in for a couple of weeks and because I have to move my lotty a few metres the peas will then be on the next lotty, will the peas be ok to dig up and put in a new bed :)
