Soaking berlotti beans?

One of the old boys on the plot, who comes from Italy, showed how he started off Berlotti beans. He cut the bottom off a plastic bottle and filled it with water. Then put about 10 beans in and left it for abot 10 -14 days. After thsi the roots should appear and you can plant it in compost.

He also advised to plant beans with the small white mark facing downwards as this is where the roots come from.

Both sound bits of advice... but if it isn't warm enough they can rot...

well ive started mine off in a glass jar with the lid on, sandwidged between some damp kitchen towel like u did in school, ones unfurling its big leaves at the moment and the other 3 are making similar motions, havent killed them yet so i guess that may be worth a go? will be transferring to compost soon i think...might be worth a try? will be sending some beans down to my sons nursery to have a go with too, exact same method as it allows little people to see roots and shoots...hope that helps some? lou x

didn't do them in a bottle, but tried some in a saucer of water. Tried others in a seedtray ... results seem possibly about even, although I think those in the seedtray seem less inclined to rot ...

I did mine in loo rolls about three weeks ago and are starting to come up now!  Didn't know any wiser and couldn't really remember how we did it at school so I just bunged em in!!!!!!  Up they come!!!!!! ;D
