Hi everyone  ;D

My Book People catalogue arrived today (issue 171). They have Jane Perrone- The Allotment Keeper's Handbook: A Down-to-earth Guide to Growing Your Own Food (Hardback) - 3.99 RRP 14.99 + 3.50 delivery or 2.50 reduced rate delivery - ref 640-AKO.

About the book......
Packed with invaluable advice, from how to choose an allotment and test its soil, to knowing your chickweed from your chicory, The Allotment Keeper's Handbook offers an enjoyable and inspiring shortcut through the trials, errors and frustrations of starting your own plot.

Dispensing with the strict calendar-based advice usually found in gardening manuals, Jane Perrone steers a carefree course through the gardener's year. Featuring monthly to-do lists, 'spotlights' on unusual vegetables, a history of allotments, an exhaustive section on crop rotation, a chapter devoted to harvesting and storage and a glossary to cut through garden jargon, this book is all you will need to get growing.

Good book, that. Some good info, quite realistic about being an allotmenteer and quite funny in places. Of course, I paid more than £3.99 for it >:(

Cheers,

I bought a book from Wyevale today. It's called Potato, cost 4.99 and has lots of info on potato varieties, growing, preparing, cooking and 150 recipes. Much better value and much more interesting than Alan Roman's Potato Book, which I also have. Hoping I can get my OH to cook more spuds and less rice or pasta this year!

That sounds good caroline, the other one i might buy is about courgettes, called what can i do with all these courgettes!

I got my GYO book for a fiver - most of it isn't her - it's written by RHS people. Quite a pleasant refresher & a few ideas. Thanks for posting this!

If you're passing a branch of Past Times, then they had a lovely little book in their sale for £3 that I got the other day, marked down from £6.99.

- the Amazon link lets you see some of the inside.  It's very clear and practical and more or less pocket-sized.  With a pretty fold-out section in the middle with coloured sketches of veggies.

Sorry - just realised I didn't put in what it's called - "Home-Grown Vegetables".  It's one of a series of four books produced by Country Living/National Trust.  The other three are "Home Grown Fruit", "Beekeeping" and "Henkeeping".
Tread softly, for you tread on my greens.
