That's some LEEK !!!!
:o

Tee Gee

What girth and cc were they D?

davyw1

As i said i only got sixth  the girth was 16" but i was short on the button CC i think was 216 for the pair.  Trying three breeds this year Cumberlands, Yorkshire Greens and Thirkstons.  They have got to be potted on this week into the deep leek potts to try and drag some more root down

For anyone wanting to have a go at this game my advice is don,t, as TEE GEE will confirm it takes over your life and empties your wallet LOL

Do you 'tube' them Davy or earth-up or just leave them. The girth is quite something but there seems to be quite a bit of green there.

Quoteas TEE GEE will confirm

Agreed!!

And it can bring on high blood pressure as it did with me.

This was my main reason for stopping!!

davyw1

No you dont tube that type just the long leek or intermediate. It deponds on the bread of leek as to earthing them up or putting a 5" collar round it. The more the green the more it feeds, the more it the feed the bigger the leek. But is only the girth that counts, They are measure round the widest point, and from the base of the leek to the button the V in the flag multiplied and that is what your result is

If they haven't altered in recent years these are the categories as I recall them;

Leeks for exhibition purposes are divided into three categories:

Pot; not more than 150mm(6")from base to button.

Intermediate; not less than 150mm(6") and not more than 350mm(14") from base to button.

Blanch; more than 350mm(14") from base to button.

The button; is where the first pair of leaves, sometimes referred to as 'flags' split e.g.V

The National Pot Leek Society give additional points for volume or cubic capacity measured on volume of blanched shaft

Tables for the calculation of cubic capacity are obtainable from the Secretary of the National Pot Leek Society.

I would have a go at showing leeks.....unfortunatly I have already made plans for my future ;D ;D ;D
I was born with nothing and have most of it left.

I'm now beginning to understand why my grandad, (a Geordie) used to sleep outside in the garden when the shows were about to start!

davyw1

Ken That was a regular thing then, but since a lot of shows are finished it very rare now. The last one i heard of was Gorden Clark ( world champion ) and a friend of mine had all his leeks slashed but that was a long time ago.
