Japanese Onion Help

I weeded my Japanese onion bed today and am worried that the onions don't appear to have bulbs, I pulled a couple to see if the bulb was below ground but they were either straight like leeks or there were remains of the bulb (from when planted as set) but the were soft and mushy. The plants seem  very healthy so maybe they will bulb up in the spring, am I worrying unnecessarily or is it not worth letting them grow on?

Any advice welcome!  :)

Mine are the same and don't look half as healthy as yours - in fact positively wimpy! It's my first time growing jap onions (well growing anything really) so not sure what to expect to be honest.  what's the drainage like in that particular patch, because mine was waterlogged recently and I'm thinking they may be rotting because they haven't been able to seal themselves.

They won't start bulbing-up till late spring, and mine don't look as good as yours either. ;D

They look really healthy .They have quite a way to go yet and will start bulbing as the length of daylight increases.

My apologies for jumping in, but my Japanese are just beginning to bulb up (London warmth).  I'm worried that I may have planted them too deep since the bulbing is occurring below the surface - should I scrape the earth away from around them?

They need to be in around October. You'd be better off getting the traditional spring-planted setts now.

You'll get some growth Caseylee but probably only spring onions or small ones for pickling...
