deleting updates

hi all,can anyone tell me if it is safe to delete updates,once they have been installed.mainly windows updates.

(On XP) I have been deleting everything under C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\
for a while with no problems.
This is where updates are downloaded prior to installation.
