Figs in containers

What size containers are best for growing figs?

All the catalogues I have looked at seem to say, simply, a "large container".

What is this when it's at home?

Plus, what's the best thing to use as the growing medium?

I would be intending to put a healthy dollop of manure/compost in the bottom, but what do figs like?

I'm growing one in a large plasterers bucket in the greenhouse (50cm diameter)
Only use well rotted manure mixed with good compost for best results 20/80%

Are you able to sink the pot (bottomless) into the ground? I did this with a plastic dustbin cut in half, using the earth from the garden mixed with some manure. 4 years on and no particular special treatment I have a decent sized tree which fruits well. It is against a south facing wall which helps.
