Lemon Tree up north

Hi,
I'm considering getting a Lemon tree and also a Lime tree.
Has anyone had success growing them in the north west ?

Can anyone give advice on varieties to consider which can be grown in the UK and crop well?
Any idea how many lemons I might get after the tree has grown up a bit?
Would it be best to grow the tree in a pot, and bring it undercover into a polytunnel during the winter?
Or to grow the tree in the soil in the polytunnel?
Do Lemon and/or Lime trees need to be sited near their own kind, like other fruit trees, for fertilization?
What height and spread for a lemon tree?

hiya, mama, we're in wigan and we have a lemon and lime tree, small at the mo, potted up and brought into the poly in winter, cover with a bit of fleece if it gets frosty and they do okay  ;D
ours are self pollinating, we get a few small fruit and freeze them until we have nough for marmalade, ours are about 18" tall now, hope this helps

I have lime, lemon, orange and kumquat and although I do not live in the frozen wastelands of the north, I grow them in very large pots and tuck them up nice and cosy for the winter. As for fruit, you will get a better crop if you do not feed them. Just let the summer rain do its job.
