Saw this and am now worrying about people seeing lotties as a way to make big money. Maybe they had been vandalised, but IMHO any allotment is worth more than cold, hard cash.

were they allowed because it's not been allotments for so long ?

I'd often thought about our association members clubbing together to buy our sites and that way we could breathe easy instead of wondering if the parish council are going to sell it all for housing.  Might be a bit harder or far more expensive to do that after this now.  :(

Hmmm interesting katy.

Although, in this case it seems that they bought it when they were an allotment society and have since ceased to use it as allotments, so basically they're just a group of people who co-own a piece of land.  I'd say they're probably legally entitled to sell it.

On the one hand I think it's a crime that allotment land is being sold left right and centre for housing, but on the other hand this land isn't currently designated as allotments so nobody's losing out?

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened

It probably is designated in some way, but that won't count for much as it's unused. They may, of course, have made an excuse for not using it in order to be able to cash in.
