Parsnip Help

HI Guys,

Visited plot today to see the condition and things are not 2 bad :)

Decided to check on my parsnips, 3 weeks ago these were still tiny maybe 1.5 inches wide at the top.

I went to pull one and found it was quite big, supermarket sized even, but it had grown twisted around another one so they both came up in bits. Pulled a 3rd which had been nicked when i was trying to pull the other 2 out and it was even bigger easly 6 inches across and 8inches deep.

(went to get camra and hubbie had already pealed and washed them sorry)

Hes also decided that there no good, soft and with a woody core in the middle and wants to throw them on the compost bin - is he right?

I had planted Tender and True and White Gem although i cant quite remember when i planted them i think its around the 2nd week in april i though parsnips tool 6-11 months so there around that window so i dont think i have left them 2 long. But i am a little confused. Do they need a frost to firm them up???

HELP!!! This is the first time i have actualy got parsnips to grow and i need advice and help

I'd leave then until the frosts Cam, that's what I do, but the ones you have should be OK, just cut out the woody wedge in the middle.  ;D ;D ;D

Hubbie put them in the bin so i have sneeked them back out and am going to roast them :)

this is my first one this year !! I usually find it a struggle to get a row growing ,think I should have done a bit of thinning this year :o

apparantly ..parsnips are the same as carrots....they dont like over manured soil...which causes the twisting and forked effect. ( wish i'd know n that b4 we planted carrots in pure well rotted horse manure!)

Mine are on the whole pretty straight, a few extra legs here and there, lol.
I just cut out the middle if they look a bit hard. I grew Guernesey Demi-long but the flavour is not that terrific, might try and get some Pommie seeds next spring and try that  ;D

I had them roasted with the middle removed and they were fine :)

I know this should be on recipes for all but do try dear Deliah`s roasted parmesan parsnips.

Same as for usual roasted ones but once they are par boiled roll them around in a liittle flour and parmesan
