Japenese Onions from seed?

I had a packet of japenese onions which i planted in August.  I have never grown thse from seed and wondered if anyne else has grown them from seed.

They are in a seed tray and about 6 inches high....does anyone know when i need to to plant them in my lottie?

Also will they be reliable or will i need to plant some sets to be on the safe side (though i have loads of them from seed).
