I know vandals can be very annoying, ok thats a little subtle, but I have a concerned question. I have on my windowsill a lovely little plant that has these berries on it. These berries are toxic in their neat state but heated up and diluted with hot water they make a great sleeping pill. Two berries being quite enough. Now when I get my lottie I will be transfering these plants onto the site. My concern is that can I get arrested for killing someone if they eat these berries, neat, while vandalising my site.

The law cannot touch you because it was their choice to eat it.Like a burglar cannot sue a householder because their dog attacked them (provided warning signs are displayed).

Personally,i think more rights should be given to the victims rather than to the villains!

Hi Trailrat, don't know the answer to your question but as a parent I would be very concerned about the possibility of a child eating one of your berries. Edible things tend to be grown on allotments and a poisonous berry would be the last thing I'd expect at an allotment. My children would always be told not to eat or pick other peoples plants (they both have it imprinted on their brains not to pick wild mushrooms) but children are not always sensible and don't always listen. If you do transfer your plant to the allotment please please please make sure all tenants at your allotment know the dangers, especially those with young children. You could put up a sign to prevent vandals from damaging themselves (not that I would care too much about them) but that won't help innocent children who aren't old enough to read.

Thanks Jesseveve, not being a parent I hadn't thought. :o :-[ Luckily they can be grown in a cold frame. For the sake of the kids I shall put a toxic notice on the coldframe with a padlock. Though like you say vandals shoudln't or wont give a hoot about a locked glass box. Thanks again for metioning it.

I read somewhere that rather than a "keep out" sign, a "danger, wasps nest" sign does a much better job!

We used to get loads of trouble at one pool - swimmers etc. disturbing the birds, but a simple "Beware of the snakes" sign worked wonders.

BTW - yes, there were snakes. Grass snakes, often saw them swimming out to the islands. When questioned we explained we were trying to warn people not to harm the snakes.

Hi Trail..Last summer I stopped a kiddy from eating Huckleberries,  thinking they were Deadly Nightshade. His Dad then explained, but I see they're gorn this year.Snake idea sounds good.A bit like the signs that say 'beware children'.

You mean the forlorn slogan of the crossing wardens "Stop children"? Doesn't seem very effective to me.
