sunflower seeds

Hi - got loadsa seeds on my russian giants.
Saved one to hang up for the birdies, but I'd like to try saving them to eat- love the ones you buy in packets so thought I'd like to do my own.
But what do I have to do to them if anything before roasting??  ???
