never heard of bronze fennel does it taste like the green one?

grawrc

Me neither. Do you have any pics? I'm certainly interested. I grew fennel for the first time this year. I really love it.

Georgie

I hope Norfolklass won't mind me coming in on her thread.  Bronze Fennel is a herb and its leaves and seeds can be used (although it is often grown as an ornamental).  They taste of aniseed, just like the vegetable Florence Fennel.  Bees love it.   ;D

Ah thanks G! So bronze is the herb (fennel seeds) as opposed to Florence what is the bulb above the root (kinda like celeriac and stuff.. or?)

not at all, georgie!
I know nothing about the culinary fennel, the one I have in my garden is the ornamental herb version and I grow it for the bees. it gets quite tall but looks great at the back of a border. it doesn't look particularly bronze in this pic but the new shoots are a lovely bronze colour:

Marian

It is very tall.....

I wonder if it will grow in a pot on my boat  ??? ::) ::)  If you think so, please can I have some.

Ta.

;) ;D

ooh, I've got no idea :-\
the plant in my garden is about 5 feet tall. you might be able to stick it in quite a big pot and the restricted roots won't let the plant get so big, but I've really got no idea!

to all those who've asked for seeds:
I had a look at the flower heads this morning and they're not quite ripe, but I have got plenty.
I'll post them out as soon as they're ready... ;D

Georgie

Hi Marian.  I've grown bronze fennel in 12" pots but I have to say that I don' think it was particularly happy.  But I agree with Norfolk Lass that the young foliage is beautiful so it's worth a try.

Not to mention the taste - I love chewing the seeds.   ;D  I'm going to try the green-leaved herb next year, 'found' some seeds at Kew.   ;)
