One of my warrens got out onto the lane today and a neighbouirs dog got hold of her!!! I can't see any physical damage but she has no tail feathers left!!

I was just wondering if the shock can kill them? She has been fine all day and has even laid an egg since lol What are the chances of me getting up to a dead chicken tomorrow?

A whole new meaning to the term "sh*t yourself"

If she has laid an egg I would just wait and see if she is still lame over the next few days, or if she perks up.

She will get over it... I had a dog kill one of my hens but was trying to get the others too - they all survived and all were laying within a week... even after the foxes visit twice mine are still laying.

DadnDom

Lol KT :)

Well she is up and about with the others this morning and seems to be doing fine, thankfully.
She does seem more nervous than usually but that is to be expected after her ordeal I suppose. Hopefully she won't be so keen to go off down the lane looking for blackberries for a while :)

I've just had to rescue my brahma from a spaniel that came in the garden!! It's chased her halfway round the garden and pulled most of her tail feathers out! I tried to catch it but it got away. I am absolutely livid!! The dog ran off with a mouthful of feathers and the owners didn't even come and see what had happened!
There is a lane that runs down the side of our house and at the bottom are a couple of holiday camps, I didn't recognise the dog so I have just been for a drive to see if I could see the dog just to let the owners know what their dog has done.
Mildred (my brahma) has no obvious damage other than the loss of feathers. I found her with her head hidden under a bush and her bum sticking out. I have her in the porch now in a box. Hopefully she will be ok.

Sorry I had to release some aggresion, unfortunately I couldn't find the dogs owners!

Toni

That makes me so angry. Dogs shouldn't be off leads if they can't be kept under control or at least within site.

I would be raging. And I would also keep driving round the sites until I found the owners too.

I have a dog, but she can't be trusted so I never let her off the lead and the chickens are in a run.

I hope you find the owners (give them hell from me) and I hope Mildred continues to be ok.

I am going to take another drive round the camps again tomorrow. The thing that annoyed me most was the dog ran off with a mouthful of feathers and the owners didn't even bother to see where they had come from?!?!
I was torn between following the dog and making sure Mildred was ok, obviously mildred won.
She seems to have perked up a bit already. She's stoped hiding her head now and is stood in her box looking for food lol :)

Heldi

How's Mildred today ? Hope she has fully recovered from her attack.

I'd be livid too.

DadnDom

She seems to have made a full recovery :) She is happily scratching round the garden with the others.

I am still determined to find the dog just so I can let the owner know what their dog did.

teresa

Go to the camp site and find the owner or manager and tell him what happened.
I am sure dogs are to be on a lead or caged on camp sites at least under owners control.
They will know where the dog is and can have a word with them or tell you where they are sited.
Some dog owners are not aware they are responsible for the dogs actions some have to be told its just like your responsible for your childrens actions some parents dont understand that as well.

I was just sat eating lunch with the children and saw the same dog come running through the garden again!!
I ran out and chased the dog through the garden onto the lane and back to her owner!
It was a little old man who seemed quite shocked when I told him what the dog had done and that I had just chased his dog back out of my garden. He was very apologetic and said his dog had never chased anything before. I told him to keep the dog on a lead when going past my house because if I caught it in my garden again I would catch it and hand it over to the dog warden!

Loose dogs are pet hate of mine and I love dogs.

When we were in Canada we had an isolated house on acreage that was on the edge of a deep ravine with a river at the bottom.

We had lots of livestock among them 3 goats, 2 young ones and a mama one with a set of twins.

We came home one day to see a 2 dogs running around the paddock  that had just an electric wire around it, the wire was trampled down, one had a chicken in it's mouth, the other was after another one, there were several bodies laying around there was no sign of any of the goats

Yes they had got out of the paddock with fright  straight through the leccy wire . we searched and found two youngs ones badly  mauled and dead  including the babies.  At first we couldn'tfind the mama, then we saw here half way down the ravine. She had jumped off in her flight.

She was very still but John insisted on going down on a rope tied to the back of the pick up truck,  he yelled up she was alive and we lowered a counterpane which he tied her in, then we moved the truck forward and hauled her up.

She was bitten all round her neck and in a bad way , we got her to the vets who cleaned out the fly eggs from the wound, her neck was broken but in a way that had not killed her somehow. We decided to take a chance and he bound the neck and we took he home. She was a long time recovering, we had to hand feed her and stand her up and hold her so she could piddle etc. We made her a run in the litchen. her neck did heal although it was always twisted and she lived her life out with us.

The point re the dog.. it belonged to a neighbour who was in no way apologetic, he said he bought a house on acreage  and moved out of city so his pets could be free, and it was my fault the goats were killed as an electric fence was not enough to protect them.

The dog also got several chickens that day too  which roamed free and some were mauled  but those that he didn't kill survived and went on to lay again after a few days. Some flew over the edge of the ravine  but came back at roosting time, some we never saw again. They didn't appear to be bothered after they got over it, their feathers grew back.

The authority investigated and informed the dog owner that acreage or not his dogs had to be contained. As her lived about a mile from us we did not have to see him daily and we didn't see the dogs again.

I was amazed that he was not bothered about hwat his dogs had done.

I think your  chook will be OK, I think shock would have killed her at the time, so she is lucky

I'm pleased Mildred is okay. I love her name by the way  ;D

I'm also glad that you managed to get a word with the dog's owner. Hopefully no more trouble from that pesky dog.

Mr Smith

If dogs get hold of your chickens you can say goodbye to a good layer ;)

I remember wealking past the pond in the University Parks in Oxford once when I was a kid, and a dog grabbed a duck and killed it, just like that. I was into taxidermy back then, so I took it home and stuffed it.

Not really funny but years ago when we had chickens loose on our field our young labrador seemed to think chickens were there as mating partners!! Our dear friend (an Irish true countryman) saw this happening, picked up a chicken and gently gave the dog a slapping with the chicken. He said dogs don't like that!! When husband came home he remarked Don't suppose the poor bloody chicken thought much of it either. However it cured the dogs habit!!

Robert_Brenchley

My sister once had an English pointer which used chickens as hot water bottles. She never harmed one, but she regularly grabbed one, dragged it into her kennel, and lay on it.

The same dog turned out wonderful, she would pick up a kitten and take it for a walk round the garden, a poor lady really distressed knocked at my door and said "There is a big dog with a kitten in it's mouth" she looked at me as if I was bonkers and replied "Oh yes she takes them for a walk" Same dog would bring me fresh laid eggs in her mouth, never broke them and waited until I put my hand down to take egg off her. Was she missed when we had to say goodbye to her.
