I have just finished reading several threads, some I've contributed to and others not, but it struck me that this site, and the people who participate within it, is such an encyclopedia of knowledge that, if we didn't have this, would be lost or not passed along on many allotment sites.

On my site we have plenty of older men (sorry, but they are the majority) who have been gardening for years, but if you ask for some advice or suggestions their responses are usually not detailed enough or totally unhelpful at the best of times, yet when I read the posts on here I can feel myself becoming more knowledgeable just based on replies that all of you have posted about one thing or another!

For example, I now know the signs of blight and what to do about it; how to keep bullying chickens at bay; how to lay a hedge; what to look out for with caterpillars; which variety of peas and beans do best and so much more that I would have never worked out on my own!

Don't take this the wrong way, but being part of this site and being able to share all of your knowledge is like having a million of my late Grandads around!  He's not here to ask anything of any more, but you guys all are and it's really fabulous.

Just wanted you all to know how valued you are  ;D

This is the only site I regularly check. Apart from anything else, all the postings (even the occasional one from someone who has a very different viewpoint from me) really does appear to be sent/typed with the best of intentions.

I have a friend who doesn't post on here but reads it a lot. He has a couple of problems (depression, addictive behaviour and other things that would be inappropriate to mention here), and sometimes finds himself sitting up late in the night, reading our questions, answers, musings and occasional arguments...

And strange as it might sound, he draws inspiration from you/us. Even when we disagree, there's always room for courtesy. And whether you realise it or not, as part of this community (new or old; recent sign-up or old lag), you've helped at least one person through some hard times.

I think that's worth remembering next time you feel strongly about how to deal with blight!

I lurked on several sites for a few weeks, and I joined this forum because it was the one where I felt that everyone was welcomed and I got a good feeling of friendliness and respect.  I can't believe I have met so many people in such a short space of time!  And not to mention how much I have learned, when I thought I knew pretty well everything  :) :) :)

Hi Suzi. My son moved up to Durham 4 years ago to be with his girl Suzie. They live in Consett. I would agree with you about this site. I have looked at other sites but I feel at home here. It don't matter if you only post once in a while you still get a friendly response. We have been to Consett to visit my son and his partner but it was so bl***y cold and windy up there. Everything is so late compared to the progress of the plants down here in Brum.
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

LOL!  Yes, it's a regional joke that it will be sunny and warm everywhere else, but that Consett will be snowing in July!  It holds the lofty title of being the highest village in England!  Air gets a bit thin there!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way about the site  ;D
