Its my first year growing melons, two are doing really well and have lots of flowers on (both male & female I think  ??? ) - do they need a hand with pollination, or will the insects do it ?  Also I think I've heard that it is best to pinch out the tips ?  Is this done after the fruit has set, or before ?  One of the plants has around 5 / 6 'leaders'.  I'm a little confused.

If they are in a greenhouse id hand polinate them - outside i dont bother.

:) I'm always confused with melons,

grow mine in a cold frame and let the insects do their thing,

I never pinch out anything , though the books say you should :P

but I still get melons and then someone pinches one >:(

good luck /shades x
