Here's a piccie of my first Red Onion (overwintered) to be harvested, beside a garlic that has had terrible rust - all tidied up but not bad for starters & encouraging for anyone else worried about rust.

Sorry, never done onions or Garlic before so am rather chuffed!

We have had our two first overwintered onions this week and Garlic foliage just beginning to go rusty...
;D

Good Gourd2

You`ve cheered me up now Saddad, our garlic has been in since Nov. and it seemed to be doing great guns now its got the rust, perhaps I`ll just ignore it.  Never happened before, first time for everything. ???

Yes, and thanks manicscousers (you could tell I was a City fan, right? If there were blue ones I'd have grown them!)! I was kinda digging for a little more praise if anyone else feels like it... even though luck played a greater role than judgement!

Oh, one question for the experts - would you expect the reds to store well (i.e. as well as ones planted this year & the Shallots), or will they be like my Japanese ones and maybe last for a few months if I'm good and remember to confess my sins to the great Onion in the sky each night??

Thanks

Ollie

we've only got about 10 out of 50 red onions that haven't gone to seed, overwintered, that is..just pulled them to dry..we've been using the seeded ones as we've gone on, the japanese don't keep, as you've said..I don't think any overwintered ones stay for more than a few months  :)
I've brought this back to the top for the onion experts to see  ;D

My overwintered onions are just starting to keel over by themselves and the outer skin browning slightly so it won't be long before they are ready for lifting. The red ones (Electric I think) still look like they are growing well, so I'm leaving them in longer.

Gave in and harvested all the garlic yestrday...it was so rusty the ground was orange! Looks like a good crop though, much bigger than last year so they are drying off now. ;D Yum yum....
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

My garlic foliage is just starting to rust - is okay to ignore this?  Don't think it's ready to harvest yet.  Or is there a treatment?

And well done Ollie - I tried red onions from set a couple of years ago and they barely doubled in size!! I'm trying again this year and things seem to be going better...

Great thanks for that.

Interestingly it seems to only be effecting the batch that I planted out in December, shortest day of the year - so stuff luna planting, or biorhythms or whatever it's called...

The rest went in October / November.
