I sowed true and tender which come to nothing but hollow crown i've got a few but not enough. Do you think its worth me trying again tomorrow at sowing some?

Rosyred, I have twice started mine on damp tissue in the airing cupboard, a few weeks ago which are now 6 inches high 2 weeks after that which are a bit smaller, and last week I sowed more, they took only 4 days to germinate.I did 4 types this last time and they have all germinated very easily.

Hollow Crown,Dagger,Javelin and Tender and True were the ones I did last week. Javelin were the first to germinate by one day,.

Damp towel in a plastic sandwich box,lid on,open the lid every day to change their bit of air and they took off. Mine are going in the ground tomorrow just like the last 2 lots

I got home this evening to find some others I had ordered last week have been delivered and I am doing them tomorrow in the cupboard too,Exhibition Longpod.

It is worth a try.

Thanks Jeannine, i'm off now to get them ready and put them in the airing cupboard. Does the kitchen roll not dry out??

There you go done......fingers crossed :)

you could do with putting them in a tupperware box or something, we used the boxes grapes come in, with a lid on, it keeps the tissue moist  :)

Jeannine

Yes Rosy you must put a lid on and as I said I open it every day to change the air. XX Jeannine

My parsnips have been disasterous this year - only four germinated, thats one each for Christmas dinner. Will try the damp tissue technique.

Hi - my 'tender and true' (or vice versa) seeds have germinated using the tupperware box method! They have little white tails. So (as a newby!) when would I plant them out - do I wait for green to start and I assume i just plant the bit of tissue with the seed on as per instructions for seeds? Sorry to sound stupid but would really like some parsnips this year (I have 5-6 from the many I sowed direct!).

Jeannine

Hi, I am just going to the lottie to plant mine right now, they have little white tail too, don't leave them long . I like to plant as soon as they have germinated, those tails can go from a tiny white spot to 1 inch in a few days, and I think they would be easily broken if left that long.Mine vary from the white spot to 1/3rd of an inch. This what I did with the last 2 lots which are growing well. make a little furrow, the same as if seedine and place them in it ,then GENTLY cover with soil, mine are in a raised bed and the soil is very soft.
