What's the secret?

Last year mine all seemed to rot away to nothing, only a couple survived more than a month. I do have clubroot, but most of the other brassicas survived, although stunted. Are swedes more vulnerable?

Any suggestions? I'm going to try them on the top half of the plot this year, hopefully with more success..... ::)

we've sowed ours in fibre pots, just a couple of turnips and swede to a pot..when they've germinated and grown a bit, they're hardened off and planted out in rows, this way, we can see the germination ..also, there's not the same problem with clubroot  :)

Looks like a South Yorks prob that R.O.T.H with swedes..WE have same prob a few miles away from you..I ain't got clubroot on plot  but They gets about cricket ball size then rot from within. Turnips grow ok.

MS, I don't think setting plants instead of seeds  is any protection from club root .
Whats others think? ..

I don't know if this means anything but... I have never been able to grow good turnips or suede, they just don't seem to come on. This year I planted the suede in pots and transplanted about a month ago they are super big strong plants. The turnip I direct seeded into a good raised bed and they look awful. XX Jeannine
When God blesses you with a multitude of seeds double  the blessing by sharing your  seeds with other folks.

I have more success with transplanted swede too, direct opposite of what the books say!

eric told us the swede start in sterilised compost so have a good root system before they go in the ground, he also grows his other brassicas the same way, also, it keep slugs off them until they can cope a bit more..we have lots of slugs and snails  ;D

Thanks,,I will give it a try  and see what happens ... I Will set some swedes in modules ....  It isn't clubroot with us.  The prob don't occur till swedes are well on their way ...
I think its some sort of flea beetle we have got in the  ground.
I Have tried Armatilox just before swedes are set ,Bromphos, loads of lime etc ,all to no avail ..
It's just swedes that get nailed .. I can grow all other brassicas with no probs ..
Also it  doesn't bother white turnips ..
As for growing brassicas cabbage etc in soil which has got clubroot it is possible to get some crops of these ..
As you say you need to  pot Your plants on and  get your plants a lot bigger than you normally would for transplanting into garden ..
Then rake out a trench and  lime it .Set your plant as deep as you can get it into bottom of trench .Leave trench open and as your plant grows keep back filling to bottom leaves of plant .The plant makes  secondary roots up its stalk .They wont be as good as plants grown without clubroot in the soil but You should  get some usable brassicas for  the table  growing them this way.. ...
