Nipping peas in the bud

My wife asked today whether there would be any advantage in nipping out the growing tips of the peas that I am starting in pots. Her reasoning for this is that we do it for our sweet peas so why not for real peas. I have never heard of it and also never even thought about doing it. Has anyone tried it and if so what were the results.
